DC Market Intelligence Report –Aug 23, 2026
Yesterday’s strongest bookmaker moves, the outcomes behind them, and the practical read for today’s market.
01 Strong Money Recap — what got backed hard
Yesterday’s tape was dominated by aggressive contractions in the bigger prices, with several runners halving (or better) from 10am to final. The most violent move was Rosato at the Curragh (29.00 into 9.50, a 67.2% contraction). That was not a drift-and-collapse story; it was sustained pressure into the close, landing right on SP. It set the tone for the day: money prepared to take sizeable chunks out of double‑digit prices across multiple tracks.
Redcar produced its own signal with Men Of Honour (26.00 into 10.00, 61.5%), then a secondary wave with Hover On The Wind (26.00 into 13.00, 50.0%). Newmarket (July) saw Aspull compressed from 71.00 into 29.00 (59.2%), a classic “price discovery” move that still left it a mid‑range outsider late, while Chester’s Big Fun (31.00 into 13.00, 58.1%) signalled similarly strong conviction.
Newton Abbot was the concentration point for decisive shortener action: Playful Fox was hammered from 2.63 into 1.22 (53.6%) and ultimately went off even shorter at SP 1.15, while Supreme Yeats (10.00 into 5.00), Max Of Stars (8.00 into 4.33) and Bacardi Blue (31.00 into 13.00) kept the pattern consistent. The Curragh also hosted a dense cluster of steamers: Howd’yadoit (81.00 into 34.00), Irish Rumour (29.00 into 13.00), Denim And Diamonds (34.00 into 17.00) and Clonmacash (15.00 into 7.50).
02 Landed vs Went Astray — keep it ruthless
Landed (2)
- Playful Fox (Newton Abbot) — 2.63 → 1.22 (53.6%) | SP 1.15 | pos: 1. Proper weight of money and it did the job.
- Clonmacash (Curragh (IRE)) — 15.00 → 7.50 (50.0%) | SP 7.50 | pos: 1. A clean, SP-aligned steam that converted.
Went Astray (17 total; key misses shown)
- Rosato (Curragh (IRE)) — 29.00 → 9.50 (67.2%) | SP 9.50 | pos: 2. Biggest move of the day, still beaten.
- Men Of Honour (Redcar) — 26.00 → 10.00 (61.5%) | SP 11.00 | pos: 5. Market interest was real; performance wasn’t.
- Aspull (Newmarket (July)) — 71.00 → 29.00 (59.2%) | SP 34.00 | pos: 7. Money came, but not enough to drag it into contention.
- Big Fun (Chester) — 31.00 → 13.00 (58.1%) | SP 13.00 | pos: 2. Steam found the right race, not the winner.
- Bacardi Blue (Newton Abbot) — 31.00 → 13.00 (58.1%) | SP 19.00 | pos: 3. Notably weaker at SP than final; the late market didn’t fully agree.
- Howd’yadoit (Curragh (IRE)) — 81.00 → 34.00 (58.0%) | SP 51.00 | pos: 5. Early contraction, then a softer SP tells its own story.
- Irish Rumour (Curragh (IRE)) — 29.00 → 13.00 (55.2%) | SP 13.00 | pos: 3. Strong enough to run on the premises, not to win.
- Notable Charm (Lingfield (AW)) — 26.00 → 13.00 (50.0%) | SP 15.00 | pos: 4. Steam without a finish.
- Denim And Diamonds (Curragh (IRE)) — 34.00 → 17.00 (50.0%) | SP 17.00 | pos: 7. Pure market interest; no race-day delivery.
- Hover On The Wind (Redcar) — 26.00 → 13.00 (50.0%) | SP 13.00 | pos: 7. A full half-price move, then nowhere.

04 What It Means — practical execution and discipline, no fluff
- Respect the signal, not the story: 20 strong steamers produced 2 winners. Treat a big contraction as a prompt to evaluate price and structure, not as permission to chase.
- SP alignment matters: the cleanest outcomes were where final and SP were tightly matched (e.g., Clonmacash final 7.50 / SP 7.50). Where SP weakened versus final (e.g., Howd’yadoit final 34.00 / SP 51.00; Bacardi Blue final 13.00 / SP 19.00), the late market was less committed—and the results reflected that.
- Separate “nearly” from “never”: some steamed runners got close without winning (e.g., Rosato pos 2; Big Fun pos 2; Irish Rumour pos 3). That’s information for profiling, but it is not the same as profitability unless you have rules for place/each-way or trade-outs.
- Track clustering is not a free edge: Newton Abbot and the Curragh supplied multiple strong steamers; only one winner came from each (as shown). Concentration of money at a venue can simply mean concentration of attention, not superior hit-rate.
- Keep yard/jockey repetition in context: Dan Skelton and Harry Skelton were the only repeated names with a conversion. Joseph Patrick O’Brien had repeated support and no wins. Repetition tells you where the market looks first; it does not tell you where results must follow.
