DC Market Intelligence Report –Aug 19, 2026

## 1) Strong Money Recap (Yesterday) – what got backed hard

Yesterday’s card set produced 15 strong steamers (all ≥15% contraction from 10am → final) across Roscommon (IRE), Chepstow, Wolverhampton (AW), and Lingfield (AW). The strongest pressure was clearly on Roscommon, which supplied the bulk of the list and most of the biggest moves.

Top of the board for raw contraction was Seven Nation Army (Roscommon), smashed from 7.00 → 2.75 (60.7%), though it actually returned SP 3.25, i.e. drifted back off the absolute low. Next came Sioux Moon (Chepstow), 8.00 → 3.75 (53.1%) with an SP 4.00—another case where the money landed hard but didn’t fully hold into the off.

There were also several classic “halve the price” steamers: Hexagonal (Roscommon) 12.00 → 6.00 (50.0%) (SP 5.00), and L B Double U (Wolverhampton AW) 9.50 → 5.00 (47.4%) (SP 5.00). At the sharp end, Rovinia (Lingfield AW) tightened from 3.25 → 1.83 (43.7%), holding exactly to SP 1.83—a clean, sustained squeeze rather than a late wobble.

A cluster sat in the 35–42% contraction range, mostly Roscommon again: Oristown Boy 9.50 → 5.50 (42.1%), Lars Soldier 15.00 → 9.00 (40.0%), Someday Somewhere 6.00 → 3.75 (37.5%), Sword Of State 7.00 → 4.50 (35.7%), Out On Friday 19.00 → 12.00 (36.8%), plus the bigger-price compressions Grit And Glory 67.00 → 41.00 (38.8%) and Summer Snow 23.00 → 15.00 (34.8%).

Away from Roscommon, the other notable movers were Heroics (Wolverhampton AW) 4.00 → 2.38 (40.5%) (SP 2.25), Crown The Future (Lingfield AW) 8.00 → 5.00 (37.5%) (SP 5.50), and Calafrio (Chepstow) 7.00 → 4.50 (35.7%) (SP 4.50).

Bottom line: plenty of compression, but not all of it was “hold-the-line” money into SP—some were early-to-midday smashes that softened late.

## 2) Landed vs Went Astray – keep it ruthless

From the 15 strong steamers, 3 won:
– Hexagonal (Roscommon) – 12.00 → 6.00 (50.0%), won (SP 5.00)
– Rovinia (Lingfield AW) – 3.25 → 1.83 (43.7%), won (SP 1.83)
– Heroics (Wolverhampton AW) – 4.00 → 2.38 (40.5%), won (SP 2.25)

That’s the good news: when the steam aligned with outcome, it did so decisively—no marginal “sort-of” signals. These were meaningful contractions that translated into results.

Now the bit that matters: the market also delivered high-conviction losers.

The worst “false steamer” on the day by magnitude was also the most painful:
– Seven Nation Army – 7.00 → 2.75 (60.7%), lost (2nd), SP 3.25

A 60%+ collapse and it still didn’t get home. That is the exact profile that punishes anyone treating steam as certainty rather than a probability shift.

Other heavy-money misses:
– Sioux Moon – 8.00 → 3.75 (53.1%), lost (5th)
– L B Double U – 9.50 → 5.00 (47.4%), lost (3rd)
– Oristown Boy – 9.50 → 5.50 (42.1%), lost (3rd)
– Lars Soldier – 15.00 → 9.00 (40.0%), lost (5th)
– Someday Somewhere – 6.00 → 3.75 (37.5%), lost (4th)
– Crown The Future – 8.00 → 5.00 (37.5%), lost (5th)
– Out On Friday – 19.00 → 12.00 (36.8%), lost (5th)
– Sword Of State – 7.00 → 4.50 (35.7%), lost (8th)
– Grit And Glory – 67.00 → 41.00 (38.8%), lost (4th)

Ruthless summary: 3 landed, 10 missed among the strong steamers explicitly listed with outcomes. Even when the money is loud, reality is allowed to disagree—often.

(Separate note: the “Landed” list also includes Fianna and Cashel Queen, but neither qualifies as a strong steamer by the ≥15% rule—useful context, but not part of the strong-steam set.)

## 3) Trainer & Jockey Support – who the money followed repeatedly

Trainers (from strong steamers):
– Denis Gerard Hogan: 2 backed / 1 won (the only yard hit twice)
– Single-hit yards that converted: Roger Teal (1/1), Alan King (1/1), Aidan Anthony Howard (1/1), Donnacha Aidan O’Brien (1/1)
– Single-hit yards that didn’t: Joseph Patrick O’Brien (1/0), Charlie Fellowes (1/0), Tom Dascombe (1/0), Joseph Anthony Murray (1/0), Michael Mulvany (1/0), Jack Foley (1/0), Stephen Thorne (1/0)

This is a “spread-book” support pattern—lots of one-offs, one repeat. No stable dominated the steaming landscape beyond Hogan appearing twice.

Jockeys (from strong steamers):
– Oisin Murphy: 3 backed / 1 won (most-followed rider by the market in this sample)
– Wesley Joyce: 2 backed / 0 won
– Chris Hayes: 2 backed / 0 won
– Perfect single-hit conversions: Reese Holohan (1/1), Marco Ghiani (1/1), James Ryan (1/1), Paddy Harnett (1/1)
– Other single-hit misses: Dylan Browne McMonagle, Tom Marquand, Pierre-Louis Jamin, Rory Mulligan, Luke McAteer (all 1/0)

Key read: repeated jockey “following” existed, but repetition did not equal reliability yesterday.

## 4) What It Means – practical execution & discipline, no fluff

1) Treat contraction as information, not instruction. Yesterday produced multiple instances where large early moves didn’t convert (including the day’s biggest smash). Steam shifts probability; it doesn’t remove variance.

2) Respect the “hold” into SP—but don’t worship it. Some of the biggest moves showed late easing (e.g., Seven Nation Army finishing at SP 3.25 after trading down to 2.75 final). Others held tight (Rovinia 1.83 → SP 1.83). The difference matters when you’re deciding whether you’re trading, taking early, or committing late.

3) Don’t overfit to names. The support was fragmented across trainers, with just one yard appearing twice. Jockey repetition existed (Murphy 3x), but the strike-rate didn’t justify blind follow. Execution should be signal-first, not personality-first.

4) Keep your rules consistent. The day’s results underline why qualifiers must be filtered and staked with discipline. Strong steamers can win well (Hexagonal/Rovinia/Heroics) and still deliver a long list of expensive losers when treated as “must bets”.

This is market intelligence, not a guarantee. It highlights where informed money concentrated, but it cannot promise outcomes, protect you from variance, or replace price discipline and staking control.
