01 Strong Money Recap — what got backed hard

Across 50 races (462 runners), the market produced 20 strong steamers by our definition (at least 15% contraction from 10am to final). The tape was busy, but the most important feature was how much of the activity sat in double-figure territory: the biggest moves were not just “nibbles”, they were full resets of expectation.

The standout contraction was Rule Seventeen at Kilbeggan: 41.00 into 12.00 (70.7%). That’s the kind of move that should force a re-price of the race. It did—yet the fact it still went off bigger on the day (SP 21.00) underlines how unstable some of these morning-led plunges can be when later liquidity arrives. Similar shape with Where Are You Now (67.00 into 34.00; SP 67.00): a large early squeeze that didn’t hold into SP.

Kilbeggan accounted for multiple hard-backed runners: Maroel (29.00 to 12.00), Pretty Wild (13.00 to 6.00), Watch The Weather (19.00 to 9.00) and The Old Brigade (26.00 to 15.00) all showed serious contraction. Bangor-on-Dee and Ascot also produced clean, punchy steams: Soldier In Mayo (11.00 to 5.00) and Raging Raj (7.50 to 4.00) were both compressed hard, while Stormhaven (7.50 to 4.33) and Classic (10.00 to 6.00) took sustained support.

The day’s “market vs SP” tension mattered. Dark Tide Rising (21.00 to 10.00; SP 5.50) is the clean version: the move not only happened early, it strengthened again by the off. Several others were essentially priced in by SP (for example, Maroel and Pretty Wild matched their final), while a few saw the SP drift back out from the final snapshot. Net: plenty of money moved, but not all of it proved durable into the most efficient point of the market.

Bottom line: There was real aggression in the morning market (headline contractions up to 70.7%), but durability into SP varied sharply—treat “big early steam” and “late confirmation” as different signals.

02 Landed vs Went Astray — keep it ruthless

Landed (3)

  • Dark Tide Rising (Worcester) — 21.00 → 10.00 (52.4%), SP 5.50, won. The day’s cleanest “kept going” profile: supported early, then even stronger into SP.
  • San Jose (Ascot) — 4.50 → 2.75 (38.9%), SP 2.88, won. A straightforward contraction in a shorter band; no drama.
  • Begger (Kilbeggan) — 67.00 → 41.00 (38.8%), SP 67.00, won. Unusual shape: strong early contraction that fully unwound by SP, yet still delivered. File as an outcome win, not a process template.

Went astray (13)

  • Maroel (Kilbeggan) — 29.00 → 12.00 (58.6%), SP 12.00, finished 4th. Big move, no win: market found it, but not enough.
  • Soldier In Mayo (Bangor-on-Dee) — 11.00 → 5.00 (54.5%), SP 5.00, finished 2nd. The classic near-miss steam: correct direction, wrong finishing slot.
  • Pretty Wild (Kilbeggan) — 13.00 → 6.00 (53.8%), SP 6.00, finished 3rd. Backed hard, still not close enough.
  • Watch The Weather (Kilbeggan) — 19.00 → 9.00 (52.6%), SP 9.00, finished 3rd. Another strong squeeze without a win.
  • Never Just A Dream (Haydock) — 21.00 → 10.00 (52.4%), SP 10.00, finished 3rd. Firmly supported, but never got the job done.
  • Trust Amy (Haydock) — 51.00 → 26.00 (49.0%), SP 26.00, finished 7th. A reminder that big prices can shorten sharply and still be nowhere.
  • Raging Raj (Ascot) — 7.50 → 4.00 (46.7%), SP 5.00, finished 2nd. Note the SP drift from final: support cooled late, and the win didn’t arrive.
  • Stormhaven (Ascot) — 7.50 → 4.33 (42.3%), SP 4.33, finished 4th. Money arrived, result didn’t.
  • Phantom Knight (Kempton AW) — 71.00 → 41.00 (42.3%), SP 51.00, finished 7th. Early contraction, late giveback, poor finish.
  • Classic (Ascot) — 10.00 → 6.00 (40.0%), SP 6.00, finished 4th. Strong move, no return.

04 What It Means — practical execution and discipline, no fluff

  1. Separate “movement” from “confirmation”. A contraction that strengthens into SP (example profile: Dark Tide Rising with SP shorter than the final snapshot) is a different quality of signal to a move that fades back out by SP (example profile: Begger), even if both can win on the day.
  2. Treat the biggest early squeezes as volatile until proven otherwise. Rule Seventeen and Where Are You Now showed extreme 10am-to-final compression but did not hold into SP. That is not an argument to ignore them; it is an argument to price the instability in your execution.
  3. Don’t confuse “nearly right” with “right”. Several strong steamers ran well without winning: Soldier In Mayo (2nd), Pretty Wild (3rd), Watch The Weather (3rd), Never Just A Dream (3rd). The market can find contenders; your approach must be built to tolerate that strike-rate reality.
  4. Be wary of over-weighting repeated yards or riders when conversion is absent. Richard Hannon (3 backed / 0 won) and the double-hit jockeys Joshua Halford and Pat Dobbs (2 backed / 0 won each) were followed by money more than once, but the scoreboard didn’t follow.
  5. Use the day’s totals to stay calibrated. From 20 strong steamers, only 3 won and 13 lost (per report totals). That gap is your reminder to keep staking and selection discipline tight: steam is information, not permission.
This is market intelligence, not a guarantee. Strong steamers highlight where price pressure was sustained from 10am to the off, but they can still lose, drift at SP, or win despite late market rejection; use the signals as inputs to execution and risk control, not as a standalone tipping method.
