Galopin Des Champs retirement closes defining staying-chase chapter
Galopin Des Champs has left the stage with his reputation secure: a dual Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, a three-time Irish Gold Cup winner and the horse around whom the modern staying-chase division was forced to organise itself.
What happened
The Willie Mullins-trained ten-year-old was officially retired on Thursday, 27 August 2026, after connections decided his racing days should end. Racing TV reported Mullins saying the decision was taken because, at Galopin Des Champs’s age, they felt he could no longer do himself justice at the level he had made his own. He retires having won 15 of his 26 starts under rules, including 12 Grade Ones.
His defining achievements came in staying chases. He won the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2023 and 2024, added Irish Gold Cup victories at Leopardstown in 2023, 2024 and 2025, and also captured major top-level prizes including the Savills Chase and Punchestown Gold Cup. His final start came when third in the Irish Gold Cup at Leopardstown in February 2026, after which a setback ruled him out of another Cheltenham Festival appearance in March.
Galopin Des Champs raced for Audrey Turley, in partnership with her husband Greg, and was partnered for the bulk of his finest days by Paul Townend. Turley paid tribute to the horse and described him as ‘one of a kind’, while Mullins highlighted his toughness, following and rare capacity to cope with a demanding Grade One programme.
There is also a plan for life beyond racing. Reports state Galopin Des Champs has gone to the Walsh family, with Ruby Walsh’s daughter Isabelle set to assess him for a possible second career in the sport-horse sphere.
Why it matters
This is not simply the retirement of a popular champion. Galopin Des Champs provided the staying-chase division with a fixed point from 2022 onwards. His blend of relentless galloping, accurate jumping at speed and ability to peak repeatedly at Leopardstown, Cheltenham and Punchestown made him the standard against which both Irish and British three-mile chasers were measured.
His 2023 Gold Cup, in which he beat Bravemansgame, announced him as the dominant open staying chaser. His 2024 defence confirmed that status, and his Leopardstown record gave the Irish Gold Cup a rare sense of inevitability while he was at his peak. Even when he was no longer winning every major target, his presence shaped pace maps, ante-post books and campaign planning for rival stables.
For Mullins, the loss is significant even by the standards of a yard with exceptional depth. Galopin Des Champs was not merely a Grade One winner; he was a repeatable Grade One performer over an extended period. That consistency allowed connections to run him in the John Durkan, Savills Chase, Irish Gold Cup, Cheltenham Gold Cup and Punchestown Gold Cup cycle, a programme few staying chasers can physically or mentally sustain.
Market Form view
Bettors should treat this as a structural change to the staying-chase landscape rather than just a sentimental retirement story. With Galopin Des Champs removed, the top of the division has no longer got the same established benchmark, so early-season form may be more influential than usual in shaping perceptions for the Gold Cup route.
The key is to monitor how Mullins redistributes targets through the autumn and winter, particularly around the John Durkan, Savills Chase, Irish Gold Cup and any Cheltenham trials. Stable intent, trip choices and jockey bookings will matter, but they should be weighed against actual race fitness and jumping fluency rather than assumed hierarchy.
Do not force a market position on reputation alone. The absence of a champion can make ante-post books look more open, but it can also expose horses who had been flattered by running for places behind a dominant rival. The first proper staying Grade Ones of the season should now be watched for pace pressure, finishing strength and whether any contender can produce Galopin Des Champs-like repeatability, not just one standout run.
