01 Strong Money Recap — what got backed hard

Yesterday’s tape delivered volume, but the hit rate didn’t keep pace with the intensity of the moves. Across 20 races (217 runners), we logged 20 strong steamers (15%+ contraction from 10am to final) and only 3 converted. The market was busy compressing prices, but in too many cases it was compressing the wrong ones.

The biggest contraction on the day was Lismacbryan at Naas, collapsing from 51.00 to 19.00 (62.7%). That kind of move is usually a statement; instead it finished 19th. Naas also produced a cluster of hard-backed runners that looked like coordinated attention rather than isolated money: Lunar Empress 12.00 to 5.00 (58.3%), Alice Monet 8.00 to 4.50 (43.8%), Miss Cashman Hooke 7.00 to 4.00 (42.9%), Whatswrongnow 21.00 to 12.00 (42.9%), God Knows 21.00 to 12.00 (42.9%), and Catch The Boss 13.00 to 8.00 (38.5%). The market had a clear view there; results were far less accommodating.

Elsewhere, Worcester saw strong compressions led by I’ve Got A Friend (26.00 to 13.00, 50.0%) and La Lolita (21.00 to 11.00, 47.6%). Brighton also featured meaningful support, with Water Angel halving from 8.00 to 4.50 (43.8%). The notable point: multiple deep moves ended around similar “tightened” SP bands (4.00–5.00 and 11.00–13.00), but only a small fraction actually had the finishing power to justify those late prices.

Bottom line: Strong steam was plentiful (20 qualifiers), but conversion was poor (3 winners). Yesterday’s edge wasn’t “find the steam” — it was “filter the steam hard and avoid the false certainty of big contractions.”

02 Landed vs Went Astray — keep it ruthless

Landed (3) — the money was right

  • I’ve Got A Friend (Worcester): 26.00 → 13.00 (50.0%) | SP 11.00 | pos 1. Big early-to-late squeeze and still found more at SP; the move had substance.
  • Space Dreamer (Brighton): 5.50 → 4.00 (27.3%) | SP 4.00 | pos 1. Cleaner, more controlled contraction; no late drift, no excuses required.
  • Steel Magnolia (Naas): 6.00 → 4.50 (25.0%) | SP 4.50 | pos 1. Not the loudest move of the day, but it was accurate.

Went astray (17) — steam without payoff

  • Lismacbryan (Naas): 51.00 → 19.00 (62.7%) | SP 19.00 | pos 19. The day’s loudest signal turned into the day’s harshest miss.
  • Lunar Empress (Naas): 12.00 → 5.00 (58.3%) | SP 5.00 | pos 4. Compressed into the sharp end and still didn’t deliver.
  • La Lolita (Worcester): 21.00 → 11.00 (47.6%) | SP 13.00 | pos 4. Strong 10am-to-final move, but drifted at SP and failed to land.
  • Alice Monet (Naas): 8.00 → 4.50 (43.8%) | SP 4.50 | pos 4. Market had it prominent; the finish didn’t match the price.
  • Water Angel (Brighton): 8.00 → 4.50 (43.8%) | SP 4.50 | pos 4. Another squeeze into single figures that produced only a place-like effort.
  • Whatswrongnow (Naas): 21.00 → 12.00 (42.9%) | SP 12.00 | pos 2. Closest of the big misses; still a loss on win-only.
  • God Knows (Naas): 21.00 → 12.00 (42.9%) | SP 11.00 | pos 10. Support was decisive; performance wasn’t competitive.
  • Miss Cashman Hooke (Naas): 7.00 → 4.00 (42.9%) | SP 4.00 | pos 4. Tightened to near-favouritism pricing and failed to finish it off.
  • Covert Legend (Naas): 19.00 → 11.00 (42.1%) | SP 11.00 | pos 14. Market interest didn’t translate to track impact.
  • Catch The Boss (Naas): 13.00 → 8.00 (38.5%) | SP 8.00 | pos 8. Solid contraction; middling outcome.

03 Trainer & Jockey Support — who the money followed repeatedly

Trainers

  • Gary Hanmer: 2 backed / 1 won. The only multi-signal yard that actually converted a strike.
  • Mrs John Harrington: 2 backed / 0 won. Repeated support without a payout.
  • Tony Carroll: 2 backed / 0 won. Another repeat-follow that didn’t get home.
  • Ollie Sangster: 1 backed / 1 won. Single hit, clean execution.
  • W McCreery: 1 backed / 1 won. Single hit, clean execution.
  • Others on the day (each 1 backed / 0 won): G A Kingston, D K Weld, Dylan Cunha, Batt Burke, P Sweeney, Miss Natalia Lupini, Maurice Andrew Ahern.

Jockeys

  • W J Lee: 2 backed / 1 won. The standout among the repeat-supported riders.
  • Shane Foley: 2 backed / 0 won. The market followed twice; no conversion.
  • Julian Pietropaolo: 2 backed / 0 won. Repeat support, no win return.
  • Marco Ghiani: 2 backed / 0 won. Same pattern: money present, result absent.
  • James Davies: 1 backed / 1 won. Single, accurate support.
  • Billy Loughnane: 1 backed / 1 won. Single, accurate support.
  • Others (each 1 backed / 0 won): Zoe McMullan, James Bowen, Sam Coen, Ray Dawson, Adam Browne-Souza, Adam Grant.

04 What It Means — practical execution and discipline, no fluff

  1. Respect the qualifier, not the story. Yesterday shows that even extreme contraction (e.g., 62.7%) is not protection against a total non-runner performance profile in result terms.
  2. Prioritise outcomes over aesthetics. The cleanest wins came off moderate-to-strong compressions (25.0% to 50.0%) that held to SP; several heavily backed runners that failed did so despite being forced into short bands.
  3. Be ruthless with repeat-follow signals that aren’t paying. Multi-backed trainers and jockeys were often followed into losses (e.g., multiple 2-backed/0-won profiles). Track which repeat sources are actually converting, not merely attracting money.
  4. Separate “close” from “correct.” A runner finishing 2nd or 4th after a hard move still counts as a miss for win-execution; yesterday had several prominent compressions that produced nearly-there results but no win return.
  5. Keep sizing and exposure anchored to realised hit rate. With 3 winners from 20 strong steamers, this is exactly the type of day that punishes loose staking and overconfidence in the raw signal.
This is market intelligence, not a guarantee. Strong steam identifies where price pressure went from 10am to the off; it does not confirm fitness, intent, suitability, or execution on the day. Use it as a filter within a disciplined process, not as a standalone instruction to bet.
